The Great Bible, first printed in 1539, is regarded as one of the most beautifully produced Bibles of its time. Prior to its creation, the Matthews Bible and the Coverdale Bible were in circulation, but both had limitations: Coverdale’s version was not translated from original texts, and the Matthews Bible was suspected to be closely linked to Tyndale’s work.

To address these concerns, Thomas Cromwell and Archbishop Thomas Cranmer commissioned Myles Coverdale to revise the Bible comprehensively. Using the Matthews Bible as a foundation, Coverdale made necessary revisions. 

Although printing began in Paris, the French Inquisition interrupted the process by arresting the printer. The printed pages were sold as waste paper, but Cromwell managed to acquire and transport them to England for completion.

Released in April 1539, the Great Bible—also called the “Cromwell Bible,” “Cranmer Bible,” and “Chained Bible”—was mandated by Cromwell to be placed in every church with appointed readers to make the Scriptures accessible to all, including the illiterate. Funded by King Henry VIII, it became the first government-authorized Bible for public use. Its widespread availability inspired many to seek personal copies, and encouraged the printing of Scriptures for the general population.
